"I think she is on the cover, and in pictures inside the story, because she is writing about her superior desirability to the men whom she might potentially partner with. And I think that in order to make that possible, she and the Atlantic need to show that she's attractive. And she is. If there were no pictures of her, that would be the question on most people's minds: what does she look like? That, in and of itself, tells you a lot. Bolick can convey socially-relevant information about the relative desirability of the men she's talking about in the article, with words. She can write about education and ambition and drive and money and whatever else, and that says enough to make the point. But Bolick's desirability can't be meaningfully conveyed without showing what she looks like. For all the talk of the declining fortunes of men relative to women, and how women are gaining the upper hand in the romantic and sexual marketplace, women's desirability continues to be largely determined by their physical appearance. I wish Bolick's accomplishments were enough to convey her desirability, but the cold calculus her editors performed in putting her on the cover says otherwise."

This might be the most important thing I’ve read in a while.

I remember she used the word “tautology” several times, which I looked up when I got home to be sure I understood it (I didn’t). Even post-clarification her words gave me a lot to think about. I guess I think that what Emily Carter was saying is that the patriarchy tells us to sit down and shut up 24/7/365 and any time you refuse, you’re being a feminist.

Last night, Marco Roth asked Emily Carter this question and I desperately wish I had transcribed her entire response. I don’t want to misquote her but I do remember that the sense of it was that her writing itself, the fact of its existence, is a feminist act. “When you look at a girl, and she looks back and looks you in the eye, whether she knows it or not, that’s a feminist act.”

As we sat in the theater, sharing a giant chocolate bar, I kept wondering why she had wanted to see a double feature of old Katharine Hepburn movies, both of which she said she’d already seen more than twenty times. Pro tip: if you are wearing a loose-fitting garment, do NOT reach above the stove to retrieve something immediately after lighting a burner and putting the teakettle on. The garment WILL catch on fire and you WILL immediately try to fan it out with your hands despite years of ‘stop drop and roll’ indoctrination.

Don’t worry, I’m fine. Just amazingly, ridiculously, unbelievably accident-prone.
