The worst thing about an unrequited crush.
literary criticism
Checked my shelves when I got home. Yep, this is the definitive list.
me: a dick you're supposed to sympathize with
Ruth: right
me: you have to be GRRRRREAT fucking writer to pull that off
i can think of, er, three people who can pull it off
AND EVEN THEY CAN ONLY PULL IT OFF SOMETIMES
Ruth: not sure anyone really has
maybe Lipsyte
me: no, Lipsyte's a mensch
Amis, Roth, Geoff Dyer
that's it.
(as far as I know).
Ruth: WE HAVE A DEFINITIVE LIST, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN

A friend says that you have to get out of NYC at least once every 100 days or you’ll go nuts. I’m at day 85 with no break in sight, and this endless string of grey kinda-cold/kinda-not afternoons makes me nostalgic for the midwest, what with its clearly delineated seasons and abundant sunshine. Maybe that’s why Dodie Bellamy’s description of Midway Airport hit me so...

Love this whole piece EG wrote about smells/the perfume book, a book which I have pored over at length in her kitchen when we were supposed to be doing ‘work.’ My favorite part, selfishly, is when she talks about Tommy Girl. Fun fact for those following along at home: I’ve worn Tommy Girl for years, which Emily did not know until after turning in this story.

"a full and unflinching account"
I’d like to read a memoir that flinched, just to see how that plays out

Reading hurts.
That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is just carrying on with their lives as though you didn’t just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback.

my favorite word
OH, huh, at this time of year I do wonder why I’ve been single for so long
thingsilearnedfromcosmo:
“Shocker: This word is a turn-off to guys. It’s not marriage or period. [I]t’s the F bomb — more than half [of the men polled] said it’s unattractive. […] Experts say it’s like burping. He knows you do it, but he’d rather think you don’t…. so you maintain a sexy, girlie mystique.”

– I remember she used the word “tautology” several times, which I looked up when I got home to be sure I understood it (I didn’t). Even post-clarification her words gave me a lot to think about. I guess I think that what Emily Carter was saying is that the patriarchy tells us to...

Word choice counts →
Have you tried telling him it makes us sound like animals and not humans? Cows and dogs are female (well and have some other names too, funny how those get appropriated offensively!). Also, I don’t even think they put ‘female’ on bathroom doors anymore, if “they” ever did.
(Thanks to tyler coates for pointing out the animals thing)

This reminds me of when I was interviewing potential roommates over the summer and one guy said he had never lived with “females” before. Like, don’t do that, maybe. npluspersonals:

Trash swan →
I still think this game is really fun. Here are some I came up with (in swan/trash swan order): Casino/Scarface; Bedford Ave, Williamsburg/5th Ave, Park Slope; real pants/leggings & sweatpants. They’re not all amazing but come on I am still pretty hungover.

"Access alone is not a culture." →
I grew up in a place where the nearest bookstore was a Barnes & Noble, 40 miles away. So yeah, there was access, in a manner of speaking. Culture? Don’t ask me unless you’ve got an hour or five to spare.
